Below is the recipe for the pollen patties handed out at today’s event. This recipe comes from the Ontario Beekeepers’ Association Technology-Transfer Program. According to a presentation at the last Nova Scotia Beekeepers Association conference, a controlled research study found significantly higher yields using these pollen patties compared to the standard Global pollen patties.

Homemade Pollen Pattie Recipe

Makes 1 pound


Granulated Sugar:       300g – 1.5 cups

Brewer’s Yeast:            76g – ½ cup (a little heaped)

Egg Powder:                36g – ½ cup (loosely packed)

Water:                          33mL – 2 Tbsp + 1 tsp

Vegetable Oil:              5mL – 1 tsp

Lemon Juice:               5mL – 1 tsp


  1. Combine dry ingredients thoroughly in a large bowl.
  2. In a separate mixing bowl, combine the vegetable oil and lemon juice with 1 tsp of water. Set aside.
  3. Add the remaining water to dry ingredients. Stir to dissolve.
  4. Mix in the set aside oil, lemon juice and water mixture.
  5. Add more water if necessary to obtain proper consistency but do so sparingly!
  6. Using a 15”x15” square piece of wax paper, place mixture and flatten.
